What We Believe

Our Mission Statement (adopted 1993, reaffirmed 2011)

We of First Presbyterian Church are a small family of believers committed to bridging the gulf of racial and class separation. As part of the Body of Christ in Benton Harobr and acknowledging Christ’s claims on our lives, our congregation is called to proclaim the gospel and witness Christ’s love, both within the community of faith and in our larger community. In doing this, we will share our faith with openness, love, warmth, and respect for the dignity and individuality of all people; we willl welcome and value diversity; we will strive to meet the needs of people in our community for sustenance and nurturing; and we will seek to deepen and broaden our own faith as we journey.

Our Motto is “Roots Down, Branches Out”

We are a proud member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and a participating member of our local Lake Michigan Presbytery and the Synod of the Covenant. We are also a proud member of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians.

As a body united in Christ, First Presbyterian Church commits itself to:

  • Treating all persons as beloved children of God;
  • Naming and addressing harassment whenever it occurs;
  • Seeking repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation when possible, and
  • Creating a community where all people of God may live, work, and worship in safety and dignity.
